The Wayfaring Adventures of Rod and Clinton...

Italy:

May, 1999: Venice

Well this time I took a picture of the Hotel looking in...

This is Rod looking out onto the bridge I was on from our hotel room.

But I had to have a shot of the view from the hotel room too of course.

I think Venice was my favorite stop on the Rod and Clint Adventure. It was even more beautiful than I had expected it would be, the food was absolutely incredible, and it was the most unusual of the towns we visited, being all canals, no roads.

On the left is probably the most recognized sight from Venice, the Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge.)

On the right is the Piazza San Marco at the center of town. It's framed by medieval buildings and museums.

Rod in front of the Palazzo Ducale facing the piazza.

Talkin' about Venice? Yup: You're talkin' about canals, baby! Lots and lots of 'em! Actually, the town itself is built in a bay, so they're actually the bay being broken up by buildings.

Many of the sights in Venice are see-able from a boat ride or two, or by foot. The town is relatively small. This is the Santa Maria Della Salute

You're talkin' canals? Yup: You're talkin' lots and lots of boats!

And the best way to get around town is on a bus. A water-bus that is.

Speaking of boats, this one is gonna need some help.

Got deliveries coming from Home Depot? You guessed it: via boat!

Walking around one day I noticed part of the canal was no longer a canal, but a muddy trench.

They were working on something and had to block off part of the canal and dry it out.

"Interesting," I thought as I immediately considered jumping down in there and looking for Ferrari keys or some loose change, but I guess someone had already thought of that.

Funny, the canal wasn't as deep as I thought it would have been.

Rod and I were sure this building was leaning to the left.

Why does that one in Pisa get all the Glory?

My "Hotel" room on the way home. Actually my room on the overnight train to Paris from Venice. It was relatively comfortable if not real spacious.

I woke up safe and sound, back in my adopted home town at 8am.
