Salzburg, Austria

Next stop was Salzberg, Austria, birthplace of Mozart. Straddling on the Salzach river in the Alps about 2 hours from Munich, Germany, this is another beautiful Austrian city bathed in amazing medieval architecture with the majestic Alps towering over the city. The Old Town contains many of Salzburg's top attractions, including a cathedral, Mozart's birthplace, and St. Peter's Cemetery.

Panorama

Believe it or not, this is the view from the very inexpensive hostel I rented in Salzburg that, although only cost me about $30 bucks a night, it was filled with mosquitos the size of Boeing 747's and were just as loud. Anyway, the place had an incredible view and was a short uphill walk from the main part of town.

On top of the hill to the rightis the Hohensalzburg, the Salzburg Castle. Parts of this castle date back to 1077. The Fortress is about 400 feet above the river level.

I have no info on this monument that I ran into the first day that I was in Salzburg, but it has a bunch of horses painted on it as well as a horsey statue. This was just down the hill from my hostel.

It was set into the stone at the base of the big hill on top of which my hostel resided.

Another view of the Castle from a bridge that crosses the Salzach River into the Old town.

This ended up being my alehouse of choice, the Funkey Monkey...
