Cars park right on the edge of the canals across the
streets from the shops. A Venice-like view as the buildings edges go right to the
canals. This is the "red light" district that boasts lovely
ladies in these rooms, just behind the glass awaiting
business. There is a coffee shop conveniently around the
corner. Three musicians taking in a boat tour of the canals. If
you ever get here, don't leave without taking one of these.
Oh, and bring some grapes, crackers, cheese and some
wine. "Coffee shops" are usually below ground level. This is
where the marijuana and hash are sold and smoked. Don't go
into a "cafe" and expect any such fare though, only "coffee
shops."
Amsterdam has a reputation of coffee shops where one can legally buy
and smoke marijuana, as well as a thriving sex-for-pay industry.
Well, that's because it's all true. However, Amsterdam is also one of
the most beautiful and historical cities you'll ever visit. Sitting
atop more bridges and canals than Venice (nearly 1200 of them)
Amsterdam's charm in art and architecture overwhelms its initial
reputation.
